Katherine Region
With a population of nearly 8,000 Katherine is the
Northern Territory's third largest township and is readily
accessible, being situated only 320 kilometers south of Darwin. The
Katherine region is a rich area in terms of natural wealth with
pristine gorges and waterways fringed by ancient rock formations.
Located 29 kilometers north east of Katherine is
Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge). This fascinating river
canyon, consisting of 13 separate gorges can be viewed either by
walking, canoe or tour boat of which Aboriginal rock art can be seen
on the canyon walls.
The Katherine River itself, from which the gorges are
derived has it's origins in the south west of Arnhem Land and flows
through the township of Katherine before joining other prominent river
systems to the west.

With its huge catchment area Katherine Gorge is
prone to flooding during the wet season. In early 1998 Katherine
township itself was completely flooded for the first time in the
township's history with more than 2 meters of water spreading
throughout the town. Since then early warning systems on the
river level have been put in place.
Edith Falls to
the north of Katherine is situated in the western fringe of the
Nitmiluk National Park area and is the home of two popular
waterfalls, whilst not great in stature provide excellent year
round swimming. Facilities here include a campground, kiosk and
readily accessible walking tracks.
Located 105 kilometers south east of Katherine is
Elsey National Park which has within it's confines portions of
the substantial Roper River system, the Waterhouse River and the
thermal springs of Mataranka. These crystal clear springs being
a constant 32 degrees Celsius, bring a welcome opportunity of a
refreshing swim indifference to the dry and harsh surroundings
common with interior Australia.
