Litchfield National Park
At 650 square kilometers Litchfield National Park is
considerably smaller in area than it's nearby sister Kakadu National
Park, but smaller does not mean less. Litchfield Park offers
differing opportunities than that found in Kakadu and whilst the
Aboriginal heritage of the area may not be as apparent it's relative
closeness of only 140 Kilometers south of Darwin and year round
swimming opportunities make this a local's favorite.
The terrain of the park consists of a large sandstone
range of which four main waterfall systems cascade. These waterfalls
flow all year round courtesy of the absorption qualities of the
sandstone, although to differing degrees depending on the time of
year.
Year round bitumen access is available to three of the
four waterfall systems which comprise of Florence, Tolmer and Wangi
Falls, with the fourth Sandy Creek Falls being 4WD access only.
Swimming opportunities predominately exist at two
locations, the first Florence Falls where access to swimming requires
a degree of fitness due to a twenty minute steep descent (and ascent
on return), the second Wangi Falls being everyone's favorite having
excellent access with the added availability of picnic and camping
grounds as well as a well stocked kiosk.
